Therapeutic Services

At PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Centre, we offer different ways to access healing and support for survivors of sexual violence. Everyone’s journey looks different, and there is no single “right” path.

It’s okay if you don’t know where to start; our team will help you with this process.

How Our Therapeutic Services Work:

After requesting services, a Systems Navigatorwill connect with you within 5-7 business days, and then our team will follow up to connect you with the next step in your care within about two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Yes - our therapy services remain free of charge to all survivors of sexual violence.

  • Trauma therapy is a form of counselling that understands how traumatic experiences can affect the body, brain, emotions, relationships, and sense of safety.

Trauma therapy uses a combination of talk therapy, nervous system regulation, and information about how trauma impacts our brains and bodies.

    Goals of trauma therapy include:

    • developing healthy and adaptive coping skills

    • building resiliency

    • increasing nervous system regulation

    • strengthening a sense of control, connection and confidence to face everyday challenges

  • Yes - everyone who receives services at PEIRSAC completes a needs assessment with a member of the Systems Navigation team.

Navigation can help you understand what options are available to you, access community support and/or help with navigating complicated systems so we can understand how best to support you.

  • We understand that life happens, and things come up. To ensure we can provide the best service to you and others, please let us know 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel or expect to be late.

If you miss an appointment without letting us know, we will contact you once. If we do not hear from you within the agreed upon time period (within one month of the missed appointment for navigation services, or within 2 weeks of the missed appointment for therapy services), we will close your file.

  • Yes. In many cases, we can offer virtual sessions if needed.

    This requires:

    • A private space where you can talk freely and not be overheard

    • A device with a camera and stable internet

We may also discuss whether virtual sessions are the right fit for the type of support you’re receiving. If your situation changes, please speak with your navigator or therapist.

  • Former clients may be able to return for more therapy services, group programming, or navigation support. Completing therapy does not permanently close the door to future support.

  • That is okay - many people come to PEIRSAC with experience in therapy. Previous therapy does not disqualify you from services. In fact, it can be helpful. We will meet you where you are and build on what you already know and have practiced.
